Timber decks with the warmth only real hardwood has.
For inspirationTimber decking in Perth
A well-built timber deck extends the way you live at home. We design and build hardwood and treated pine decks that sit comfortably with the architecture of the house, with substructure, drainage and fixings chosen for Perth's sandy soils and long, dry summers.
Why it’s worth doing well
Designed for the house
Board direction, levels and edge details are planned to suit your floor plan and how you use the space.
Substructure done properly
Footings, bearers and joists are sized and spaced to suit the deck height and the boards you choose.
Refined detailing
Picture-frame edges, clean step nosings and considered fixings make the difference you notice every day.
Finished with care
We talk you through oiling, staining and long-term maintenance so the timber ages the way you want it to.
Materials
What we work with
We’ll bring samples to the site visit so you can see colour and grain in your own light. Compare materials.
- Merbau
- Rich, deep colour and naturally durable. Bleeds tannin when new, so it needs a little care near light paving.
- Spotted gum
- An Australian hardwood with a lively grain and good bushfire performance ratings in many profiles.
- Jarrah
- The classic Western Australian hardwood. Beautiful and hard-wearing, with supply and price that vary.
- Treated pine
- The most economical option. Best painted or stained, and well suited to substructure and budget-conscious builds.

Before you start
Things to consider
- Hardwood boards move with moisture, so gaps and fixings are planned for it.
- Raised decks and those near boundaries may need a building permit.
- Ground clearance and ventilation affect how long the substructure lasts.
- Some decks, pergolas and structures need a building permit from your local council, depending on height, size and location. We will explain what applies to your project before any work begins.

FAQ
Timber decking questions
Which timber is best for a deck in Perth?
It depends on the look, budget and how much maintenance you're happy with. Merbau and spotted gum are popular hardwoods; treated pine suits painted finishes and tighter budgets. We'll show you samples at the site visit.
How often does a timber deck need oiling?
In full Perth sun, most hardwood decks look their best with a fresh coat of oil every 6 to 12 months. You can also let the timber silver off naturally.
Do I need council approval for a deck?
Many ground-level decks don't, but raised decks and some decks near boundaries do. Requirements vary between councils, so we check for your property.
