Planning guide

Preparing for your project

A little preparation makes the first conversation more useful and helps you get an accurate quote sooner.

01

Start with how you'll use the space

Think about who will use it and when: morning coffee, family dinners, entertaining, kids playing. This guides size, shape, shade and where steps and furniture go.

Note which way the space faces. Western sun is intense on summer afternoons, while north-facing areas get winter warmth. Both affect material choice and whether you'll want a pergola.

02

Take rough measurements

Measure the area you have in mind: the footprint of a pergola or deck, the run and height of a fence or screen, and roughly how high a deck would sit (for example, level with an internal floor).

Note anything in the way: taps, downpipes, air-conditioning units, meters, trees and existing paving. Approximate is fine. We measure precisely at the site visit.

03

Take useful photos

Wide shots from each corner of the area, a shot from inside looking out, and close-ups of anything unusual such as steps, slopes, retaining walls existing fences or the frame of an existing structure.

You can upload them with your enquiry or use the photo planner for preliminary notes.

04

Think about materials and maintenance

Decide how much upkeep you're comfortable with. Oiled hardwood pergolas, screens and decks look superb but need a fresh coat every so often; painted pine needs repainting; composites need very little maintenance but dark colours get hot in Perth sun.

Our materials comparison covers appearance, maintenance, durability, relative cost and heat.

05

Understand possible approvals

Roofed or attached pergolas, raised decks, tall screens and front fences often need a building permit or must meet council rules, while many low structures don't. Requirements vary between councils.

We'll explain what applies to your project. Allow extra time in your plans if a permit is needed.

06

Set a comfortable budget range

A range helps us recommend the right materials and design from the start. Remember to allow for things like steps, balustrades, lighting by an electrician, and any permits.

The instant estimate gives an indicative figure to help you plan, before we confirm everything on site.

07

Prepare for the site visit

Have your ideas, photos of styles you like, and any house plans or survey drawings ready. Make sure we can access the area, including side gates.

We'll measure, check levels, soil and access, talk through options and explain the next steps. Your written quote follows.
